As Cieran stepped out of the station, the chilly, early afternoon air hit him like a balm. The ocean breeze carried a hint of salt on it, mingling with the scent of the damp pavement, and the low hum of the distant waves softened the tense silence that clung to him. He crossed the car park, his footsteps slow, as he pulled out his phone and leaned against his car. With a deep breath, he pressed the call button.

“Dad, it’s me,” he said when the call connected, his voice steadier than he felt.

On the other end, Superintendent Black’s voice was brisk but warm. “Cieran, is everything all right?” he asked on the other end of the phone. “How is the case going?”

Cieran hesitated, his gaze drifting over the horizon where the ocean met the sky. “It’s… going,” he replied. “There’s something up with this case. I’m not sure if it’s a cover-up or if this case is just generally weird… but now we’ve got a suspect.”

“Yes?” his father asked, his tone suddenly far more sharp and attentive.

“A young woman, early twenties,” Cieran responded. “She worked for the victim in a kind of personal assistant capacity. She claims that her job title is research assistant, but it seems that he’s more or less turned her into a kind of errand girl.” He paused, rolling his shoulders to try to relieve the tension that was building there. “And it seems that she was also, potentially, obsessed with him. And, well, you know how that goes.”

“I do,” his father replied. His voice was measured, but there was an edge to it that was almost calculating like he was trying to work out why Cieran was calling.

And Cieran couldn’t blame him for that. It was not often that Cieran called for no reason. Even after all the work he and his father had done to repair the damage to their relationship, all was not well yet. Cieran still felt like he had to walk on eggshells around Clyde, and he still felt like the man was hiding something from him.

And so, sometimes he thought it best to limit his communication with his father, and he knew that Clyde knew as much.

After a pause, Clyde added, “But I also know that you don’t need my help to bring the woman in for questioning.”

“We’ve done a bit of that already,” Cieran admitted, his voice dropping as he looked down and tapped his fingers on the cool metal of the car. “But now she’s clammed up, and we don’t have enough evidence to make an arrest stick just yet. We’re going to need a search warrant.”

Again, there was a brief pause. “I can get that set up for you,” his father replied. “I’ll call you as soon as it’s signed. But… that’s not the sole reason that you’re calling me, is it?”

Clyde Black had not worked in an official investigator capacity in years, but let it not be said that Clyde wasn’t still as sharp as a tack.
